Tip of the Week – Do Your Shopping Online

By | May 19, 2010

Shopping OnlineShopping online is full of conveniences, but did you realize that it is eco-friendly too. That’s right, internet shopping saves energy, resulting in enormous environmental benefits.

On average, an e-commerce warehouse use 1/16th of the energy that is used to operate a traditional retail store. It also saves transportation energy. Even overnight air shipping uses 40% less fuel than the average car trip to the mall. In fact, each minute spent driving to the mall uses twenty times more energy than a minute spent shopping online.

So go nuts…and start shopping now!

Wow… thanks for posting this! I’ve always heard that it was just the opposite because of the packaging materials and shipping footprint. Perhaps I’ll feel less guilty next time I buy something on line!

While my business ships across Canada & the USA I also deliver (FREE) in my local area which has helped our city shop online but get the products delivered quickly to their door. The key to shopping online and making it worthwhile is having LOTS of variety! I hated having to shop @ 10 different stores online to get what I wanted so finding a place that offers lots of variety and being a one-stop-shop is great! Less packaging is best so long as it protects during shipping. I also use biodegradable packing and recycled boxes to save on the footprint.

This is a great post. We urge all our patrons to carry out online shopping from the Hotel. We are an Eco friendly Hotel in Jaipur, India and we certainly realize the importance of being able to shop from the internet as it saves the energy used to travel to the mall. Also, Malls and shopping arcades can then operate under smaller roofs as most people would be shopping online and wont need to be accommodated inside shopping premises. This could save electricity!

I think this post makes an excellent statement. No one can deny these days that the easiest way to find what you are looking for is to do your shopping online. Not only is it saving you money on fuel, but it’s preventing to some extent, the amount of polution we put into the air. I find it especially helpful in cases where you are looking for that hard to find item that you would have to travel to several different locations to purchase. For those of us trying to live a green lifestyle, we are especially prone to having trouble finding what we need. Sometimes while online shopping you will come across a site that you just have to share with your friends. For all of my friends in the Green community, I encourage you to visit

It’s an excellent site for Green lifestyle shopping and they carry everything from beeswax candles to eco friendly cleaning supplies!

    Happy Shopping!
